- “Highlife” is a musical style which emerged in Ghana in the 1920s during the colonial period. Highlife is based on the traditional music of the Akan tribe, but is played with Western instruments. It became popular worldwide in the 1950s and 1960s, and has an enduring influence in Jazz.
